Former Redemptorist Houses, Churches, and Missions
URUGUAY
French-speaking Redemptorists from the Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré arrived in Uruguay on January 7, 1966 to help in the pastoral ministries of the confreres there. They were welcomed in Tapes, at the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro y San Alfonso (Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St Alphonsus) parish church by 9 Uruguayan Redemptorist priests, 2 brothers, and 3 students. The mission was formally founded on November 4, 1968 as the Canadian Mission in Uruguay.

Our brothers originally ministered to 2 parishes in Uruguay: the parish church of Tapes, and the parish church of Santisima Trinidad (Holy Trinity) in Nueva Helvecia. Soon after the mission was established, the confreres were also asked to minister in the parish church of Santa Isabel de Hungria (St Elizabeth of Hungary) in Salinas, and in the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) in Barros Blancos.

A sudden rupture in relations with the Bishop of Canelones made the confreres abandon their parish and mission in Salinas. However, despite the directive from the bishop, three Uruguayan confreres refused to leave the parish which ultimately led to them leaving the ranks of the Order. The mission in Nueva Helvecia was also ended when it was returned to the diocese in 1970.

In 1971, the parish of Tapes had 3 Redemptorist priests, 2 brothers, and 1 student, while the parish in Barros Blancos had 5 Redemptorist priests and 2 brothers, who all developed a lively pastoral and social ministry to their parishioners assisted by the Sisters of Charity of Quebec.

The Canadian mission in Uruguay ended with the departure of all Canadian Redemptorists from Uruguay in 1993.
